Executive Summary

Fluor provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for PKN ORLEN for a CDU IV modernization to increase high margin product yields.

The scope of facilities included revamping the vacuum distillation section of the existing CDU IV unit, including replacement of column shell and internals, two transfer lines, six heat exchangers, four pumps, LRVP vacuum skid, booster and two stages ejectors and modernization of existing foundations and structures.

Client's Challenge

PKN ORLEN began the CDU IV modernization project to increase high margin product yield of vacuum diesel P-40. The modernization was based on deeper vacuum (from 40 to 15 mbar) in vacuum column K-5N and energy optimization achieved by modification of the pump-around system and crude preheat train.

Fluor's Solution

The optimization study, basic design, engineering and procurement for the CDU IV modernization was performed by our Gliwice, Poland, office. The construction management was performed by mix of Gliwice staff and local specialists.

The CDU IV unit was built in the 1970s. We had executed a prior modernization project in the late 1990s.

Conclusion

We provided services for PKN ORLEN to modernize a CDU IV unit. The overall CDU IV capacity was 440 tons per hour.
