Executive Summary

Fluor provided staff augmentation and technical support to TU Electric for planning, designing and installing company-wide telecommunications systems. To assure that TU Electric's voice, data and video communication needs were met well into the 1990s, the systems incorporated modern technologies including fiber optics, digital microwave and trunked mobile radio.

Client's Challenge

TU Electric had a customer base of two million spread out over nearly one-third of the state of Texas at the time. The utility transmitted and distributed power generated by its own lignite and gas plants and brought the Comanche Peak Nuclear Station on line by 1990.

Fluor's Solution

Fluor supplied the technical staff to support all phases of these projects. Staff members worked under the direction of TU Electric technical managers. Customer service, plant operations, system maintenance, disaster control and most daily activities were connected for efficient voice, data, facsimile and video transmission.

To create a compatible, reliable, state-of-the-art network required installation of a digital network to link corporate facilities, digital telephone switches at critical locations and a trunked mobile radio system. Network facilities included both microwave radio and fiber optic cable. All major corporate telephone switches and data ports were digitally linked.

Conclusion

The TU Electric telecommunications expansion and system upgrade was successfully installed and operational.
