At the time the project commenced, processes at BP's Kwinana refinery in Australia were gauged and controlled from seven control rooms. Fluor modernized the entire refinery control system.
Fluor had been involved in more than 100 refinery control modernization projects around the world. For this project Fluor used an integrated Distributed Control System (DCS) and process computer that centralized the refinery's control operations, achieving significant operating cost savings. Honeywell basic and multifunction controllers fed information via data highways to operator stations in the central control room and two field centres. A process computer connected to the control system ran complex plant optimisation strategies, mass and energy balances, and plant graphics to improve product quality and throughput.
