Multinet Gas System Maintenance

Fluor's original contract for routine maintenance of 40 percent of Victoria's gas distribution network was with the Gas and Fuel Corporation, a state government-owned enterprise that was later incorporated and divided into three companies. Fluor successfully re-tendered to provide maintenance services to one of them, Multinet Gas, created by the split.

Multinet Gas's territory represented 30 percent of the former network and was concentrated in urban areas, covering 8,900 kilometers of pipeline and servicing 583,000 customers. Fluor's maintenance team provided all-day, every-day service and revised former minimum staffing levels by reinforcing crew leaders' responsibilities.

An explosion at the Longford gas plant saw Fluor respond immediately to Multinet. Throughout the weekend Fluor had an emergency team of 220 personnel in action. All were at work on the colossal task of helping Victorians close their gas outlets.

The next month when gas was restored, Fluor had a major role in the massive task of assisting customers in the turn-on operation.
