Fluor's original contract for routine maintenance of 40% of Victoria's gas distribution network was with the Gas and Fuel Corporation, a state government-owned enterprise that was later incorporated and divided into three companies. We successfully re-tendered to provide maintenance services to Multinet Gas, one of the companies created by the split.
Multinet Gas's territory represented 30% of the former network and was concentrated in urban areas, covering 8,900 kilometers of pipeline and servicing 583,000 customers. Our maintenance team provided all-day, every-day service and revised former minimum staffing levels by reinforcing crew leaders' responsibilities.
An explosion at the Longford gas plant saw Fluor respond immediately to Multinet. Throughout the weekend, we had an emergency team of 220 personnel in action. All were at work on the colossal task of helping Victorians close their gas outlets.
The next month when gas was restored, we had a major role in the massive task of assisting customers in the turn-on operation.
