Executive Summary

To meet growing market demand for parenteral products, Alcon Laboratories sanctioned a capital expansion for their Humacao pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. Our San Juan office was responsible for the design and construction a Class 100 cleanroom facility where sterile solutions are manufactured and packed for Alcon's line of parenteral products. This was one of the areas included in an expansion of the Alcon plant.

Client's Challenge

Alcon relocated an ophthalmic line from Dallas, Texas, to Humacao, Puerto Rico. The total project included two separate formulation and packaging plants of 28,000 and 45,000 square feet, as well as an administration complex, laboratory, cafeteria and energy center.

Fluor's Solution

The design of clean rooms is a field where Fluor offers comprehensive qualifications. Special attention was paid to the HVAC system including room pressurization, supply and return air with HEPA-filtered laminar-flow ceilings and automated controls.

The REP A-filtered laminar flow air systems and related architectural, electrical and HVAC requirements for Class 100 and below clean rooms place this type of facility in a highly specialized area of design engineering.

Conclusion

We provided design and construction services for the relocation of an ophthalmic line and associated facilities to Humacao, Puerto Rico. The Alcon Humacao expansion is completed and operational.
