Westrail Railway Maintenance

Fluor won the maintenance contract for the state's vital standard gauge track that included the main interstate system, links between major mining centres and between Kalgoorlie and Esperance on the south coast, representing 1,400 kilometres of track, mostly in remote, semi-desert environments.

When cyclones Vance and Elaine swept into southern Western Australia, Fluor was called upon to repair the railway line between Kalgoorlie and Norseman.

Once the trains were running again, Westrail was impressed with three aspects of Fluor's work: the excellent planning, which included active consideration of contingencies; strong communication allowing Westrail to keep customers consistently informed and provide the government with accurate daily progress reports; and thirdly, that when opening times were set, Westrail was able to meet them, enabling accurate recovery programs.
