Client: Minera Chinalco Perú S.A.
Location: Junín Region, Peru
Business Segment: Urban Solutions
Industry: Mining & Metals

Executive Summary
Fluor was selected by Minera Chinalco Perú S.A. to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) services for its Toromocho Expansion Project in Junín Region, Peru. The expansion was designed to increase the mine’s copper output by 45%.
Client's Challenge
Minera Chinalco Perú is a subsidiary of Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), China's largest state-owned aluminum provider. China is the world's biggest copper consumer.
The mine contains 1.526 billion tons of ore, with average copper content of 0.48%.
Fluor's Solution
The project team applied knowledge gained on similar copper projects in Peru and Chile. The majority of the detail engineering and all procurement, contracts and project controls efforts were executed from our Lima project office, and the Peru-centric execution strategy involved hiring a team of local professionals.
The project, carried out on a fast-track schedule, was located in a remote, high-altitude region, with elevation ranging between 4,500 and 5,200 meters above sea level. Work at a high elevation required a proactive safety culture on site.
Conclusion
Fluor provided EPCm services to Minera Chinalco Perú to expand its Toromocho mine. Annual copper output was expected to increase to 300,000 tons.
