Toromocho Expansion Project

Fluor was selected by Minera Chinalco Perú S.A. to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCm) services for its Toromocho Expansion Project in Junín Region, Perú. The expansion is designed to increase the mine’s copper output by 45 percent by 2020.

Client's Challenge

Minera Chinalco Perú is a subsidiary of Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), China's largest state-owned aluminum provider. China is the world's biggest copper consumer.

The mine contains 1.526 billion tons of ore, with average copper content of 0.48 percent.

Fluor's Solution

The project team is applying knowledge gained on similar copper projects in Perú and Chile. The majority of the detail engineering and all procurement, contracts and project controls efforts will be executed from Fluor's Lima project office, and the Perú-centric execution strategy involved hiring a team of local professionals.

The project is on a fast-track schedule and is located in a remote, high-altitude region, with elevation ranging between 4,500 and 5,200 meters above sea level. Work at a high elevation requires a proactive safety culture on site.

Fluor is providing EPCm services to Minera Chinalco Perú to expand its Toromocho mine. Annual copper output will increase to 300,000 tons by 2020.
