Executive Summary


Fluor provided construction, maintenance and modification services to Alabama Power Company in Dothan, Alabama for the Joseph M. Farley 1,720-megawatt (MW) nuclear power generating station.

Client's Challenge


The Farley Nuclear Power Station is owned by Alabama Power and operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company.

Construction of the nuclear plant began in 1970, and Unit 1 achieved commercial operation in 1977. Unit 2 began commercial operation in 1981. The facility contains two units with pressurized water reactor plants supplied by Westinghouse.

Fluor's Solution


Fluor performed construction, maintenance and modifications services on the Farley Nuclear Power Plant. We also provided field technical and engineering support, project quality assurance, site and quality control and inspection services.

We performed construction of the $1.5 billion project using union craftworkers under provisions of a project labor agreement negotiated with the International Building Trade Unions.

In addition, we provided project document control, cost control, planning and scheduling, warehousing and material control, site security, project safety and labor relations.

Since being placed into commercial operation, both units at the Farley Nuclear Plant have set records within the utility industry and are recognized for their outstanding operating histories.

Conclusion


Fluor completed construction on Units 1 and 2 in 1977 and 1981 respectively.

During the construction period, the project achieved several industry safety records on seven different occasions by working 1 million work hours without an injury.

The Farley Nuclear Plant operating units continue to set records within the utility industry and are recognized for their outstanding operating histories.
