Executive Summary

Completed at a cost of over $660 million, the Nissan light truck manufacturing facility had the capacity to produce 240,000 cars and trucks annually and represented a major success story for both Fluor and the owner.

Equipped with extensive robotics and highly automated, the Nissan plant was one of the most modern in the world at that time.

Client's Challenge

As its initial investment in the United States, the establishment of a total grass-roots automotive facility with over 3.4 million square feet under roof was a significant capital investment for Nissan. As a fast-track project, meeting schedule delivery was a critical parameter.

Fluor's Solution

Fluor was responsible for the installation and start-up of the production equipment and conveyors. Included were a 1.2-million-square-foot body and frame-stamping area, a 550,000-square-foot paint shop and a 1.3-million-square-foot trim and chassis facility.

To complete the plant in just over two years from ground breaking, we were able to resource skilled construction craft to meet the requirement of over 3,500 craft workers at peak.

Conclusion

The plant was successfully completed two months ahead of schedule. Subsequent to completion, Nissan selected Fluor to provide an ongoing maintenance program.
