Executive Summary

Fluor provided design and construction management services for the 66,000-square-foot Bio-Products Development Center of Eastman Kodak's Life Sciences Division. The building was the headquarters and process development facility for the division and produced a variety of products used in the pharmaceutical, diagnostic chemical and nutrition markets.

Client's Challenge

The highly automated facility accommodated a wide latitude of operations for recombinant and nonrecombinant organisms in a small-scale and large-scale batch and fed-batch fermentations.

The facility was designed to be readily upgraded to process products under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Current Good Manufacturing Practices.

Fluor's Solution

The Development Center was Fluor's first design/build project for Kodak in Rochester, NY. Product recovery capabilities included centrifugation, membrane separations, precipitation and other state-of-the-art methods.

The plant also contained fundamental purification processes such as ion exchange and crystallization, evaporation and centrifuging as well as a laboratory for the development of purification processes at small scales.

Conclusion

The open-shop design/build project was completed in 21 months. Kodak later awarded Fluor additional engineering and construction contracts for the facility, including a maintenance contract for the Bio-Products Development Center.
