Savannah River Site
Executive Summary
Client's Challenge
Fluor's Solution
Conclusion
Fluor is responsible for managing and operating the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site in South Carolina, which encompasses a 310-square-mile area and features a workforce of approximately 6,200 personnel.
The mission of the Savannah River Site (SRS) is the safe, secure, cost-effective management of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile, nuclear materials, and the environment. The site is tasked with processing and storing nuclear materials as well as developing and deploying technologies to treat nuclear and hazardous wastes and environmental management.

The DOE needed a contractor to efficiently manage the site, which features a nuclear weapons stockpile and processing and storage facilities for nuclear materials. The DOE required a team to provide environmental management services, clean up nuclear legacy materials and facilities, and manage the Savannah River National Laboratory, a federally-funded research and development center.
In 2008, the DOE awarded a contract to manage and operate the SRS complex to a Fluor-led partnership called Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC. This includes world-renown firms that are leaders in the nuclear, defense, and technology industries. To meet the complex challenges at the SRS site, Fluor brought together a management team of highly-qualified industry experts experienced in managing nuclear, environmental clean-up, and defense programs. Fluor brings its expertise to expand the services of the Savannah River National Laboratory.
Fluor began a 90-day transition period in the summer of 2008 to assume the management of this five-year contract, which includes five one-year renewal options. Fluor is bringing a new culture to the site to ensure safe and effective operations at SRS.
