Feature Story: 2016 Year in Review
Each year, Fluor and its employees strive to create resilient, sustainable communities where our employees live and work. We focus our philanthropic efforts in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, social services, community and economic development and the environment. These four areas align with our business priorities and leverage our capabilities as a global engineering and construction company.
Last year, Fluor and the Fluor Foundation contributed more than $7.5 million in financial support to community initiatives and programs, while employees volunteered approximately 42,200 hours.
Fluor invests in programs that inspire and prepare students to excel in STEM-based disciplines and careers, as well as community-building strategies and initiatives that encourage lasting change. In 2016, Fluor and its employees:
- Enabled more than 236,000 primary and secondary school students to receive 1.9 million hours of STEM academic training, enrichment or increased awareness
- Helped more than 200,000 youth receive two million hours of life-skills enrichment training
- Provided 671,000 meals to the hungry through participation in feeding programs and support of meal service delivery organizations
- Assisted more than 39,000 individuals with preventive and emergency services, such as emergency shelter, health care check-ups and counseling for the homeless and victims of domestic abuse
- Contributed to the building and/or refurbishment of 66 homes and facilities serving the public good
- Recycled and disposed of more than nine tons of litter and beautified and restored communities by planting 7,000 trees, flowers and shrubs
Partner Profile: Which Project Wins Global Community Project Fund Best-in-Class?
Fluor’s Global Community Project Fund was established to engage employees with a unique opportunity to give back to their communities. In February 2016, Fluor employees around the world were encouraged to nominate a community improvement project benefiting a local charitable organization.
Ten winners were selected through an online worldwide public vote, and the winning benefiting organizations each received $10,000 from Fluor's $100,000 Global Community Project Fund and assistance from employee volunteers to complete their projects.
From June through December, the 10 projects competed for the Best-in-Class honor. The Best-in-Class recognition is awarded to the project that demonstrated the most progress, impact, employee support and visibility in their local community and beyond. The winner receives an additional $10,000 to help advance its mission.

Fluor Cares Profile: Engineering Our Tomorrow
Each year during Fluor’s Engineers Week, employees showcase their passion for engineering, spark interest in the profession within their communities and serve as a reminder of how engineers have helped shaped the world. For 50 years, Fluor has supported Engineers Week by participating in educational outreach programs through DiscoverE, taking part in Fluor's Friendly Competition and recognizing our professional engineers and their contributions to the company.
Fluor engages and empowers employees to promote STEM education to students through outreach and volunteerism. While volunteering with youth during Engineers Week, employees help foster an interest in engineering at an early age by visiting local schools and offering students the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that spark their creativity and imagination. This year, Fluor volunteers visited 164 schools and charitable organizations, providing more than 12,800 students with approximately 18,800 hours of STEM enrichment.
In addition, student teams participated in the Fluor Engineering Challenge. The challenge is a great way for students to share in the Engineers Week fun. With the help of an expert team of scientists and educators, the Fluor Friendly Competition designed in 2016 by Team Wabu in Manila, has been adapted for students as a hands-on experience to coincide with this year’s celebrations.

To help further DiscoverE’s mission, Fluor employees participated in the Global Marathon For, By and About Women in Engineering & Technology. The two-day event included compelling presentations, conversations and the opportunity to share stories of personal, educational and professional challenges and successes.
Renee Perry, senior director of Material Management, Fluor, served as the 2017 Global Marathon chair and was Fluor's representative on the Global Marathon Thought Leadership team. In addition, Fluor’s Katy Marshall, vice president, project director, hosted a session, “Mentoring Throughout Your Career,” on the second day of the event.
