Mining Projects

Escondida Sulphide Leach Project
Antofagasta, Chile

Minera Escondida Limitada operates an open-pit mine and two concentrators in northern Chile's Atacama Desert - one of the largest copper mines in the world.

  • The sulphide leach facilities will process marginal grade ore using heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW)
  • The installed capacity will be 180,000 tpa of copper cathode
  • The heap leach pad will be 4.9 km long, 2.0 km wide with an ultimate height of 126 meters
  • The project includes a water supply system that desalinates water at the port of Coloso and pumps it to the mine site

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Asset Development Projects
Western Australia

The project was a major expansion to the client's iron-ore production capacity in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

  • It included a new greenfield mine as well as a 40km heavy-haul rail spur and port expansion facilities
  • Fluor performed the feasibility study and provided EPCM services in conjunction with a joint venture partner
  • Successful performance has recently led to a new award for another major expansion

Muskeg River Oil Sands Project
Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada

Fluor performed EPC/EPCM services for the Muskeg River oil sands mine constructed as part of the Athasbasca Oil Sands project.

  • The project was designed to produce 155,000 barrels per day of bitumen. Production began in late-2002 and will continue for approximately 30 years
  • Fluor received several awards for its role on the project, including the Shell Canada President's award for Safest Contractor

Yanacocha Project
Peru

Minera Yanacocha S.R.L. (MYSRL) is the largest gold producer in Latin America and represents Perú’s first large-scale heap-leaching operation.

  • MYSRL consists of several mine pits, gold recovery plants and leach pads
  • As part of a global alliance with Newmont, Fluor is providing EPCM services for a series of expansions, upgrades and maintenance at Yanacocha
  • Fluor has received a number of safety recognition awards throughout the past three years

Batu Hijau
Sumbawa, Indonesia

The largest grassroots copper and gold mining facility in the world is located on the remote island of Sumbawa in central Indonesia.

  • The completed project includes a 120,000-ton-per-day mine, concentrator, regenerative material handling systems between the mine and the concentrator, wastewater treatment and undersea tailings disposal, port, power plant, and related infrastructure facilities
  • Fluor performed feasibility studies of for the mega-project and then provided EPC services, completing the project ahead of schedule and well under budget. Since completion of the original project, we have also executed several expansion projects
  • Rated outstanding for environmental achievements by lenders' independent auditors
  • Used a hazardous waste and waste management plan that saved US$800,000
