Fine, Specialty, and Intermediates

For more than 20 years, Fluor has performed conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement, construction and construction management services for numerous fine, specialty, and intermediate chemical projects. We have extensive experience serving many different clients in a variety of industries. Recently, our list of projects has included clients such as Cargill, Huels, Hercules, DuPont, Lyondell, DSM, BF Goodrich, Degussa, Ineos, and Eastman.

Ethylene and Derivatives

For more than three decades, Fluor has provided project development, master planning and optimization scenarios, feasibility studies, process design, engineering, procurement, construction, construction management as well as operations and maintenance services for ethylene complexes worldwide. We also have extensive experience in the execution and program management of integrated petrochemical facilities downstream of ethylene crackers. Our projects have ranged from technology screenings and process studies to expansions, revamps, debottlenecking projects for grassroots plants and integrated facilities. Recent examples include projects for clients such as Mobil in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and Venezuela, Equate in Kuwait, Nova Chemicals in Canada, Dow in Argentina, Yanpet in KSA, Petrochemia in KSA, Jubail United in KSA and BASF YPC in Nanjing, China. Our clients have entrusted us with ethylene and downstream projects worth more than $15 billion in capital investment.

Aromatics and Derivatives

Fluor has extensive global experience with the project development, master planning for refinery-petrochemical integrations, process design, engineering, procurement, and construction of aromatics and derivatives plants. This experience includes work with an extensive list of licensors and processes within the aromatics and downstream products field. The scope of work has ranged from grassroots aromatics complexes to expansions and revamps to meet specific market requirements. We also have assisted many of our clients by performing feasibility studies in order to evaluate various licensed processes and in developing and optimizing overall processing schemes. These experiences have included projects for clients such as BP, Chevron Chemical, ADNOC, PIC and Phillips.

Engineering Plastics

Fluor has a comprehensive background and expertise in all phases of engineering plastics plant design, engineering and construction. Our projects have covered all areas of production for nylons, polycarbonates and polyester. We have executed projects from technology screenings and process studies to expansions, revamps, modernizations and debottlenecking projects for integrated grassroots plant facilities. This experiences has included the execution of projects for clients such as DuPont, ICI, DuPontSA, Eastman Chemical, Wellman, General Electric and Bayer.

Technology

First-of-a-Kind Technology

Fluor's proven technology and global execution capabilities are of particular value to our clients when it comes to commercializing first-of-a-kind technologies. Our full-service capabilities offer clients a choice of expertise and services, from technology development in the pilot plant stage through conceptual design, optimization, front-end design, engineering, global procurement, construction, commissioning and start-up. Fluor has completed process development for a lactic acid and biodegradable polymer for a confidential client. This project started with pilot plant trials. DuPont has commissioned the services of Fluor to provide a technology upgrade to its existing Hytrel®/Crastin® process. Dupont has accepted our recommendations to the process upgrade. We have provided support in the development of basic data and have performed front-end design, engineering, procurement and construction for the facility. The facility was commissioned in 1999. Conoco selected Fluor to support its design development and commercialization of a first-of-a-kind carbon fiber technology.

Technology Transfer

Fluor is active in project execution globally. This broad geographic experience allows us to gain extensive knowledge of in-country codes and standards, environmental regulations, labor posture, safety culture and procurement in different regions of the world. Our knowledge base offers clients significant added value in transferring technology globally. With our international experience, we develop front-end design and project execution plans that incorporate in-country needs, and facilitate safe and successful mechanical completion and start-up of plant facilities.

Technology Relationships

One of Fluor's strategic initiatives is to further develop and maintain relationships with selected technology suppliers. These relationships are key to supporting our clients in international target markets and high-growth technology areas. Fluor has formed relationships with several technology providers, such as ICI Bi-Chlor. Fluor is the preferred contractor to build large-scale chlor-alkali plants for the production of caustic soda and chlorine, incorporating ICI Chlor Chemicals' new bipolar technology known as "BiChlor." Compared to existing types of bipolar electrolysers currently on the market, BiChlor makes vast and important improvements. The new technology reduces costs, improves quality and enhances safety during production. Fluor's long and successful history in the chlor-alkali engineering and construction markets, coupled with ICI's technology base, provides our clients with the only such combination of skills and services in the market today. Fluor is a qualified contractor for Borealis Borstar technology. Borealis is one of Europe's leading polyolefin producers.

Fluor's expertise in total integration of utility and offsite systems for grassroots and revamped facilities has generated cost savings, as well as enhanced precommissioning and start-up schedules for our clients. Our extensive knowledge and experience in the engineering, design and construction of utility and offsite systems covers many industries, from petrochemical processing to fine and specialty chemicals.
