Sustainable development means that we meet the needs of our clients while also conducting our business in a socially, economically, and environmentally responsible manner to the benefit of current and future generations. The concept of future generations, or leaving our world better than we found it, has taken on increasing currency and importance over recent years.

At Fluor, we balance achievement of our business goals with supporting the social, economic, and environmental performance that creates a sustainable platform for our clients, shareholders, employees, and other major stakeholders for many generations to come. This requires us to take an even more proactive approach to many of the Corporate Responsibility components found on this site, several of which are illustrated below, as well as others such as Craft Training and Energy Savings.

Safety and Health

We are committed to a working environment that minimizes risk to the safety and health of all employees and the general public. We also help our employees enhance their well-being through education and wellness programs. And we will continue to address both the environmental and health impact of our operations by reducing waste, emissions, and discharges and by using energy efficiently.

To create an ever-safer working environment for Fluor employees and those of our subcontractors and suppliers, we have shifted from a ZERO Accidents to a ZERO IncidentsSM approach (Fluor is the first major contractor to execute a ZERO Incidents standard). The safety performance of all business groups is monitored monthly, and performance is evaluated against targets. Through our global culture of safety performance, we consistently achieve one of the best safety records in the industries we serve.

Environment

Fluor implements many projects with environmental standards beyond legal requirements and participates in efforts to improve industry environmental performance in all areas of our operations. Our proven HSE Management System integrates the highest international standards — including ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 — into each project phase and verifies our consistent and complete performance.

Leaders of the G8 nations asked the World Economic Forum to provide a business perspective on global climate change for presentation to the 2008 G8 meeting to be hosted by Japan. Alan Boeckmann is among seven leading company CEOs who serve on a steering committee that oversees the development of this policy perspective.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are reflected in Fluor's global workforce. Diversity and inclusion provides a rich variety of talents, skills, backgrounds, and perspectives and are important elements in our human resources management strategies such as recruitment, career development, talent management, and equal opportunity guidelines.

Integrity

In all of its dealings, Fluor conducts its global operations with the utmost integrity and honesty. We are committed to the highest standards of responsibility regarding the business decisions and actions of our employees. For example, as described under Compliance and Ethics, Fluor has led a campaign on the bribery and corruption that destroys the business environment and undermine socio-economic and political reform.

Community Involvement

Examples of Fluor's community involvement include the Bursary Program that provides scholarships to engineering students in South Africa and the Fluor Manila Scholarship Program that provides scholarships to Filipino students.
