Fluor employees around the world have a longstanding tradition of volunteerism and community service, with countless charitable organizations and schools benefiting from their generosity and hard work. Through the Fluor Employee Volunteer Program, employees form teams to invest their skills in community service projects that meet community needs and promote good will.
In fact, Fluor is a pioneer in corporate volunteerism with its first employee volunteer team, the Fluor Community Involvement Team (FCIT), formed in 1976 in Orange County, California. Today many FCITs exist throughout the United States while similar employee volunteer teams have been established at international locations. Employee steering committees and team leaders guide the activities as well as select and plan volunteer projects. On average, FCIT and other volunteer teams participate in 10 to 15 projects annually at each location.
Employees impact their communities in many ways, reflecting the diversity of our employee population and the global nature of our operations. Volunteer construction projects, for example, take many forms: Building a playground for blind children in California, installing ramps at the homes of disabled citizens in South Carolina, installing a well at an orphanage in the Philippines, and constructing homes with Habitat for Humanity in Ohio and Poland. Employees have also collected books to supply school libraries in the Bahamas, held global food drives helping to fill local food banks, and collected clothing to assist women entering the workplace. These teams touch lives and assist with community programs — delivering meals to seniors, walking to raise funds for cancer research and staffing an art booth for developmentally disabled children.
Annually, Fluor employee-volunteer teams combine to carry out a Global Service Project: Building Futures. Employees at locations worldwide select schools and youth organizations, providing backpacks filled with school supplies while also assisting schools with facility renovation and other needs. More than 7,000 backpacks are provided annually to children in such countries as China, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States and Trinidad.
“The Global Building Futures project is one of the most popular events our employees participate in. It gives our employees the opportunity to see first hand how they can make a difference around the world and see the benefits of their efforts.
