Fluor is a Global Leader in Environmental Remediation of Nuclear Sites

Cleanup of a nuclear site can be as simple as excavation and offsite disposal of impacted media, or as complicated as applying conventional and innovative technologies to remediate sites. We find solutions that can limit customer liabilities and lead to the lowest cost and shortest closure time.

In an increasingly competitive global market, our customers are searching for economical solutions to environmental liabilities. These solutions often rely on newer, more efficient remediation technologies. We have a 20-plus year history of applying new technologies and processes and use strategic combinations of technologies to reduce both the costs and time to closure.

Fluor has performed extensive field remediation of waste sites, burial grounds and confirmatory sampling sites on complex remediation projects. For example, at Fernald, Fluor safely restored, remediated and transitioned the site to safe and stable final land-use conditions, consistent with regulatory and stakeholder expectations. We fully integrate site restoration activities with ongoing remediation work for the most efficient use of workforce and resources. Fluor's field expertise and project management tools have produced work process efficiencies, reduced schedule risk, enhanced safety and accelerated site closure compliant with DOE and regulatory requirements.

Fluor has demonstrated experience with various remediation techniques:

  • Chemical treatment of lead contaminated soil
  • Contaminated soil excavation
  • Decommissioning high risk wells
  • Extraction and treatment of groundwater for uranium, chromium and carbon tetrachloride
  • Design and construction of an in situ redox manipulation groundwater treatment chemical barrier
  • Reinjection of groundwater-reagent mixture to promote subsurface reactions that cause free metals to bind or fix onto soil particles, rendering them inert or immobile
  • Removal of underground storage tanks
  • Slant well drilling to significant depths
  • Soil venting and bio-enhanced treatment
  • Solid waste landfill excavation
  • Steam injection and stripping at sites impacted by fuel and heavy hydrocarbons
  • Vacuum removal of carbon tetrachloride
