Australia’s abundant natural resources have always been, and continue to play an important part in the national economy. Since 1956, Fluor has assisted many clients in mining for coal, iron ore, bauxite, copper, gold, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, and silver. Many of these projects are in remote locations and require specialised execution approaches to overcome the challenges associated with the project environments.
Beginning in 1960, self sufficiency in the domestic production of energy and chemicals was a goal that Fluor was able to help make a reality through the design, construction, and maintenance of oil refineries, pipelines, power plants, and chemical facilities. New capacity and expansions were realized in butadiene, ethylene, synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride, bitumen, styrene, paints, polypropylene, and plastics. In the early 1970’s when oil and gas wells were drilled in the Bass Strait, Fluor became a regular contractor for these projects.
